Parent Involvement

Parental Involvement Policy

The Opportunity Charter School agrees to implement the following statutory requirements:

  • The school will put into operation programs, activities and procedures for the involvement of parents in the school with Title I, Part A programs, consistent with section 1118 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).   Those programs, activities and procedures will be planned and operated with meaningful consultation with parents of participating children.
  • Consistent with section 1118, the school will work to ensure that the required school-level parental involvement policies meet the requirements of section 1118(b) of the ESEA, and each include, as a component, a school-parent compact consistent with section 1118(d) of the ESEA.
  • In carrying out the Title I, Part A parental involvement requirements, to the extent practicable, the school district and its schools will provide full opportunities for the participation of parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory children, including providing information and school reports required under section 1111 of the ESEA in an understandable and uniform format and, including alternative formats upon request, and, to the extent practicable, in a language parents understand.
  • If the LEA plan for Title I, Part A, developed under section 1112 of the ESEA, is not satisfactory to the parents of participating children, the school district will submit any parent comments with the plan when the school district submits the plan to the State Department of Education.
  • The school will be governed by the following statutory definition of parental involvement and will carry out programs, activities and procedures in accordance with this definition:

Parental involvement means the participation of parents in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities, including ensuring—
(A)     that parents play an integral role in assisting their child’s learning;
(B)    that parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education at school;
(C)    that parents are full partners in their child’s education and are included, as appropriate, in decision-making and on advisory committees to assist in the education of their child;
(D)    the carrying out of other activities, such as those described in section 1118 of the ESEA.
The school will inform parents and parental organizations of the purpose and existence of the Parental Information and Resource Center in the State.

The Leadership Committee will work in coordination with the PTA to meet these requirements.

Policies for Parents

Family Involvement Policy

The Opportunity Charter School recognizes that family involvement is a critical component of education. Parents of OCS students are vital contributors in the education of their children. Accordingly, parents are encouraged to participate in the development of programs and activities and to stay informed about programs in which their students participate. It is through mutual understanding and close cooperation between the school and home that a student’s academic success will thrive.

Two-way communication, both verbal and written, provides a foundation for a strong partnership between the school and home to provide an effective educational program for all students. There are several scheduled events throughout the school year where students and families gather together to celebrate in the interest of increasing the value of education while building community spirit.

Some of these include:

  • Admissions Open Houses: OCS families are invited to come out to promote the school to prospective families seeking admission to OCS.
  • Parents are able to participate in ongoing workshops held throughout the school year on a variety of topics.
  • Advocacy Day: Parents are bused to Albany to show support for Charter Schools.
  • The school displays its educational materials and curricula during Back to School Night in the fall, and at the annual Science Fair that is held each spring.
  • Parent-Teacher Conferences: See the school calendar for dates.

Planners: Please make sure that your student is bringing home his/her planner every night and that you are signing it after seeing that the homework is completed.

Notes: Sign all notes that are brought home and send in a note anytime your child is absent.

Emergencies: Please make sure that the phone numbers we have are current and up-to-date so in the event of an emergency, we’re able to contact you immediately.

School Arrival: Students are expected to be at school by 7:50 a.m. After 8:00 a.m., students are marked late. Late arrivals impact student learning and disrupt the organization of the classroom. Please make sure your child arrives on time each day.

Inclement weather/snow days: In the event that school will be closed due to inclement weather, you’ll receive a phone call the evening before or in the morning. Please make sure your telephone number is listed with our office and your child's homeroom teacher.

Personal electronics: Electronic devices, including iPods and cell phones, may not be brought to school. Any student found with one of these devices will have the device taken. Parents must come to the school to retrieve the device. We established this policy to support the education and safety of our students; we have found these devices to be disruptive in the classroom and a source of conflict between students.

Uniforms

OCS Uniform Policy 2013-2014

The Opportunity Charter School is a uniform school.  OCS believes there are numerous benefits to students wearing uniforms such as:

· Immediate identification and security

· Promotion of a positive school culture

· Structured academic focus

Students are required to wear their uniform and should do so with pride. There are several options for students to choose from to express their individuality and school spirit.  During the school day students cannot wear non-OCS items such as sweaters, sweatshirts, and jean jackets over their uniform. The school logo should be clearly identifiable and visible at all times.   Students who do not comply with the uniform policy will serve detention as determined by the Dean.  Students who do not comply with the uniform policy are required to report to the Assistant Principal for Middle School, Mr. Johnson, or the Assistant Principal for High School, Mr. Greene. A phone call will be made home to parents notifying them that the student is out of compliance.

Students will not be allowed to participate in any school related activities if they are not in uniform during the school day.  This also includes special events during the day.

Students must be in official OCS branded apparel for all school-sponsored trips unless specifically stated otherwise on the permission slip. Students who do not comply with the uniform policy will not attend the trip regardless of permission or payment submitted.
